A Dentistry Sign Board

How often should you go see your dentist? This question is addressed here, with a few suggestions. Frequency suggestions range from once to up to four times a year. How often you visit a dentist will depend largely on the dental health risk each individual is exposed to.

Whether you visit the dentist once, twice or four times a year, there are times when you just have to pay unscheduled visits. An unscheduled visit could be as a result of a dental emergency. A few such emergencies can include:

  • Abscess of the gum.
  • Abscess of the pulpal.
  • Swelling and bleeding tooth.
  • Broken teeth.
  • Infected or cracked tooth which could lead to pain on biting.
  • Inflammation in the wisdom teeth area.
  • Trauma to the teeth resulting from an accident.

Any of these can have you racing to your dental caregiver for an unscheduled visit. Most of the issues listed are things your family dentist should be able to handle. There are however some other situations that may require the expertise of a cosmetic dentist. We will dwell a bit more on these.

Who is a Cosmetic Dentist?

Though some professionals claim that there is no such thing as a cosmetic dentist, for the sake of this article, we shall define it as a person who specializes in performing aesthetic work on the dental appearance of his/her patients. You may want to read more about this here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cosmetic_dentistry.

A cosmetic dental procedure may not have any functional effect on the patient, it will however, most likely improve the patient’s appearance and by extension the patient’s confidence.

Examples of Dental Cosmetic Procedures:

Let’s look at a few examples of some of the procedures you could get done for cosmetic purposes.

Teeth Whitening:

A lot of people undergo this procedure in an attempt to improve the whiteness of their teeth. It’s really a simple procedure where the dentist uses bleach to make the teeth whiter. Most dentists will perform this procedure very easily.

Inlays and Onlays:

This is an option used when it is not possible for a tooth to be filled. This will usually be because some part of the tooth has fallen off such that the remaining structure will not provide the support needed for the filling.

These inlays and onlays are made from composite resin material and adhesive dental cement is used to attach them to the tooth. Inlays are inserted on the surface of the tooth being treated while onlays are used as a full coverage over the tooth being treated.

With this done, the tooth’s shape is restored because the inlay or onlay is providing good support that strengthens the tooth. This also prevents further deterioration of the tooth.

Dental Crown:

If a person has badly discolored or misshapen teeth, this procedure can be used to cover the tooth. It will restore the tooth’s shape, strength, appearance, and size. It can also be used when a decayed or damaged tooth needs to be replaced.

Dental Veneers:

Interestingly, this is called “Hollywood teeth” and with good reason too. Aside from the fact that it is a really expensive procedure, it can be used to drastically improve the appearance of our teeth. It can be used to modify the shape, size, color and even length of your teeth.

This procedure involves the shaving off of the teeth’s top layer and replacing it with a shell made of porcelain or resin. These shells which are of course tooth-colored are what we know as dental veneers.

Dental Implants:

This is another expensive procedure which is basically the insertion of titanium implants into a space from which a tooth was removed. This implant acts as a new foundation on which the new tooth will be fixed.

Choosing a Cosmetic and Dental Office:

Above, we mentioned some situations where you may need to pay a quick, unscheduled visit to your dentist. That is aside from your year or bi-yearly visits. When those emergencies arise, and you need a dentist very quickly, what do you do?

It is important to consider this and some other important points when deciding on a dental office. Aside from the regular points like expertise, reputation, and the likes, the location of your dentist is very important.

If you reside in Alexandria VA, does it make sense for you to have your dentist’s office 41 miles away in Baltimore? The right thing to do will be to find an Alexandria VA dentist. This way, you can have emergencies quickly and professionally handled.

You do not want to have to begin to commute long distances to meet your dentist or to go to a totally new dentist during an emergency simply because your regular dentist who understands your dental history is too far away.
